The one that shows up out of nowhere? Like the kind you get right before jumping into a pool or stepping on stage? That’s how I used to know I was being triggered.

It’ll come with a quiet tension in my body.

Triggers are real. And they’re not sin on their own.

They’re signals—like warning lights on a dashboard—telling you that something familiar is happening.

Something that once led you down a dark path.

A trigger is anything that awakens a feeling or memory that once pulled you into lust. Here’s how triggers latch unto you.

It doesn’t start on the day you visit that adult website.

It starts in the moment of weakness before it.

A stressful day.

A fight at home.

A long, bad day.

And in that moment, when you give in.

Your mind enjoys the feeling—and slowly, it attaches itself to that feeling and setting that led to you giving in, it clings to your everyday lifestyle, your habits, your moods, your routines.

So much so that every time there’s a stressful day or a fight at home, you begin to feel triggered again.

That’s how a trigger is formed.

That’s why we must stay alert.

We need to learn what makes us feel tempted—and prepare before it happens.

There’s a little trick that helps me remember this. It’s called HALTS:

Hungry

Angry

Lonely

Tired

Stressed

When I feel any of these, I know I need to slow down, pray, and ask God for help.

For me, I was always tempted when I was stressed.

Like when work wasn’t going well, I just wanted something to make me feel better—something that made me feel like I was progressing.

And pornography promised that feeling… for a moment.

But afterward?

Emptiness.
